Embedded Firmware

Technology Kitchen has many years of experience developing real-time algorithms and application firmware to meet a variety of demanding and time-critical embedded controller requirements. We are proficient in both C and assembler and have experience with a variety of microcontrollers and processors.

We have the latest development software including compilers/assemblers, emulation/ in-circuit debugging tools, version control, and issue tracking. We employ a structured, four-phase engineering development process. This begins with a detailed quote and includes a design specification document. For each project phase, we provide the deliverables for customer review and conduct both internal and client design reviews. This process minimizes project risk and ensures that we are meeting client expectations throughout the development process.

Prototype & Low-Volume Manufacturing

Technology Kitchen has numerous years of experience in rapid prototype development and low-volume manufacturing. We are known for providing innovative solutions and meeting aggressive schedules. By leveraging the experience of our cross-functional engineering team and selecting the most appropriate fabrication process and technology, we can develop a prototype optimized for your particular application.

Our in-house staff is skilled at producing prototypes and doing low-volume manufacturing of PCBs, wire harnesses, mechanical, and electromechanical assemblies. We have strong relationships with our suppliers and only utilize established, high-quality organizations. We leverage our suppliers to provide commercial electronic and mechanical components, bare PCB fabrication, precision sheet metal, and custom machined parts.

TK employs an internally-developed Quality Assurance Process which addresses documentation quality, incoming inspection, and functional testing to ensure product is in compliance with documentation and meets functional requirements. Assemblies are built, inspected, and tested with strict adherence to the manufacturing documentation package. Inspection and test procedures or checklists are developed to maintain consistency and completeness. All inspection and test records are documented and filed as a permanent record.

This process is designed to monitor and improve both internal and vendor quality. Defects are addressed through root-cause analysis and closed-loop corrective action, employing principles and techniques of Total Quality Management and other industry standard tools. If supplier components are involved, the supplier’s quality organization is included in the corrective action loop.

For projects requiring high-volume production, we have a strategic relationship with a contract manufacturer/assembler having full automated SMT and through-hole assembly capability. We can also review design documentation for manufacturability and completeness and help our clients make a smooth transition to higher-volume production.

Life-Cycle Product Engineering

Technology Kitchen can extend product engineering support beyond the development period for any of your designs. If your business requires assistance to address product issues at any time in the product life-cycle, TK can serve as your virtual product engineering arm. TK has extensive experience in failure analysis and closed-loop corrective action. We can determine the cause of the issue and develop the most efficient corrective action, whether it is a product design, manufacturing process, or packaging and shipping issue. TK can also provide failure rate predictions based on field failure data and reliability analysis.

TK can also address issues related to parts obsolescence or loss of source. Solutions can range from a simple part substitution, to a minor modification, to a complete redesign. We have experience in a wide range of manufacturing processes and can offer alternatives if one method becomes problematic. In any case, TK will strive to find the most cost-effective solution for our client.

We understand that one of our key products is engineering documentation and our staff takes great pride in producing clean, accurate, complete, and easy-to-read manufacturing documentation packages. We leverage the broad experience of our computer, electrical, and mechanical engineers and technical support staff to bring a wide range of knowledge with documentation standards, best practices, and lessons learned to each design project. This is coupled with our development process and quality assurance process to ensure that all documentation meets industry standards and any client-specific requirements.

Test Systems

TK has developed a variety of test systems. These systems typically employ a TK-developed, PC-based test application and may also include custom or commercial electrical, mechanical, electromechanical, and/or thermal test hardware. Some systems are automated for use in production manufacturing for verification of electrical and mechanical parameters.

In addition to being used for manufacturing, the PC-based test software can be very valuable during product development and system testing. These systems can reduce development time and enable more thorough system testing to be conducted, ensuring each design is robust.

The test software enables monitoring and status logging for embedded systems. It also provides a convenient and user-friendly method for configuring options and for enabling firmware upgrades of embedded devices.

TK typically uses Labwindows CVI to create test software. We have developed an extensive library of modules, functions, and code that can be leveraged to produce a sophisticated new test system in a short period of time.
